iPad Apps Reviews

The number and range of apps appearing on the market can be bewildering. How can you be sure that an app is suitable for the age or developmental stage of your child? In fact, the growth in the iPad app market is so rapid that I have moved to a new dedicated website. The reviews on this site will remain for the moment. The new site contains these existing reviews together with information about exciting new iPad apps. Join me at:

The apps reviewed here are only for iPad and they represent the very best of story and educational apps for children. Each app is carefully and thoroughly appraised, then rated for its educational and fun value, with a maximum rating of 5 in each category.

You can also find information about the educational content of each app. This might be the quality of the story, any in-app activities or information about the app content – in fact, anything which supports your child’s learning.

One of the greatest strengths of the app medium is the facility to animate pictures, adding optional narration for early readers and music to enhance the reading experience. In this sense, apps sit somewhere between traditional books and films. Whichever apps you choose, your child will gain most from the experience if you share the app content with them on occasions, discussing themes, characters and settings or anything in the story which interests them.

The educational potential of apps is, as yet, largely unexplored but it has enormous potential. The range of artistic styles and themes are already far wider than those of traditional books, so this site will also keep you updated with any research into the potential of apps for young learners.

Book Reviews

There are two sections to the book reviews. In the first, you can find reviews of books for teachers, centred either around aspects of teaching Primary English or books about learning styles.

Books reviewed for children encompass fiction and non-fiction. Only the best books for 3 to 11 year olds are reviewed on this site, often following topical interest. For example, 2012 sees the bicentenary of Charles Dickens’ birth and the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic, so there are recommendations to support both of these events.

Some of the best fiction for children is also reviewed, with links directly to Amazon for ease of purchasing. There are, of course, many books published which cannot be reviewed here due to space limitation. If you have specific questions about books for children, check to see if I have posted an Amazon review, or email me on and I will do my best to help you find just the right book for your needs.

Good reviews of Good books are so valuable to parents and teachers, so I have set up a dedicated website just for that! The new site contains these existing reviews together with information about exciting new publications. Join me at:
